I need a solution

Hi,

I have BE 2014 SP2, windows 2008 R2 SP1.

I have upgrade Backup Exec 2014 to SP2.

All virtual machine backups end with the error 0xe0009b61:

'Final error: 0xe0009b61 - Backup Exec could not log on to the server with the logon account specified for it. The logon account does not have valid credentials. Ensure that the user name and password are correct in the logon account.
Final error category: Security Errors'

Before upgrading everything worked regularly.

The test credential is ok.

any ideas?

Thanks

NBAC wont start after upgrade to 7.6 in clustered master server

I need a solution

Hey guys, issue with NBAC after uprading NBU 7.5.0.4 to 7.6.1 on a Windows 2008 R2 Cluster.

We have a Master Server-only clustered with Microsoft Cluster. NBAC was working normally before the upgrade.

Before upgrading, we set the USE_VXSS to PROHIBITED, and the upgrade went fine. Installation logs show the install going thru the AZ files normally.

After the upgrade, when changing USE_VXSS back to AUTOMATIC, the Authorization and other services won't start.

A few troubleshooting we've made:

1) Running admincmd\bpnbaz.exe -upgrade and admincmd\bpnbaz.exe -setupmaster. Both fail with "Cannot contact the Authorization Service".

2) As I have no problems in loosing the NBAC configs (they are very simple and I could rebuild it from scratch), tried replacing the NBAZDB.db with the NBAZDB.template but the services wouldn't start after that, so I rolled it back.

3) Putting hostnames in server.conf, vxdbms.conf and EngineName key with the same value

    http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/netbackup-71-75-upgrade-issue-when-nbac-enabled

    Service still doesnt start

4) Compared \sec\az\bin\VRTSaz.conf with a working 7.6.1 NBAC installation, as suggested by another KB.

We noticed the build numbers didn't match: problematic cluster has it as 5.0.27.0 and our working lab has it as 5.0.54.0. Changing this config didn't help, so we rolled it back too.

5) Started the AZ deamon in debug mode, as suggested by the debugging NBAC KB. Returned looks like database related:

sec\az\bin>nbazd.exe -eazs "C:\Program Files\Veritas\netbackup\sec\az\bin\eazs.loc" -fg 9

28/04/2015 15:44:06 VxSS-vxazd LOG V-18-4204 Server is stopped.

Relational database is obviously up.

We'd like to bring the NBAC up or at least drop it so we can reconfigure it. But the unsintalling NBAC KB (https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH189775.html) does't offer the steps for MSCS server.

Any advice?

Thanks a lot.

Flashbackup snapshot error 156

I need a solution

Hello everybody,

I would like to ask for a suggestion regarding windows flashbackup backups and restores.

I have to backup and restore a system with a millions of little files (this is a characteristic of the application running on the server).

Description of the enviroment:

1 Mastar / Media server Redhat

1 media server Redhat

1 Windows server Client with 3 disk volume drive units which the size every unit is 3TB

Backup type: Windows Flashbackup

The backups have been working successfuly until the April 22th.  The april 23th the server stops because storage problems. I found that one of the volume drive is up to 99% (20 GB free space of 2.99 TB).

When I run the backup i got the error 156 snapshot error. I found out the technote NetBackup VSS snapshot error encountered (156) at https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH75214.html.

I took the full volume drive off from the backup selection and the backup works without that volume.

I have been asked to thake the backup from that volume before purge or move the information. Then I created another policy only with the full volumne drive in order to thake the backup but i still gettin the 156 error.

Does any body have suggestions to this problem?

Best regards

Number of media Servers for an SSO license

I need a solution

Hi,
Is there a limit for number of media servers being used for sharing tape drives?

We are trying to add a new media server to the existing environment. Currently, tape drives are shared betweeen servers 1 and 2.
Server 3 is added to the environment and all neccessary licenses(including SSO) are added.

We are able to share the tape drives only between two servers. If we try to add server 3, server 1 disconnects and only two paths are shown at any point in time.

However tpconfig -d or vmoprcmd -d is showing all the tape drives on all 3 servers.

NB admin console is not showing the third path which was configured. Duplication jobs get failed if server 1 is removed.

Is there a limit for the license set?

Hello All,

I am looking for some help on what would be the best practice for removing pdvfs directories from the /var/tmp file system?  The /var/tmp file system is filling up with pdvfs directories and I would like to remove these however; the only articale I can find refrerences an EEB fro NBU 7.0.1.

https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH153190.html

I don't think this applies becuase currently we are running NBU 7.6.0.2 on all systems in the environment.

Master and Media Servers are running Solaris 10 and NBU 7.6.0.2

All Clients are running NBU 7.6.0.2

Thank you in advance for yoyr help!!

When I SSH to master server, under activity monitor, I keep seeing    catalog backup status code of  2009 and  2. It always show   two status code of 2 and one status code of 2009.  We are using   Scalar i40  Quantum tape library, its current version is 175.GS001. Based on our weekly tape backup, we expected weekly tape repot but received zero.  Tried to run manual report same issue.  I believe this catalog issue impacting tape backup.

I have researched on Symantec website found this KB  https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH141955.html to resolved the status code 2. But when I log into server, we do not have  color:#6E6E6E">NBDB.db under bin folder.

My question is, how can I resolve this issue.?  I am new backup adman not much knowledgeable with symantec products. Would you please advise?

Hello everyone,

I have a old 64bit server with 2008 R2 installed on it with BE2012. We recently purchase a new 64bit server and installed win 2k12 R2 with BE2014. I will like to move all of the backup information for the past 3 years to the new server. What is the best and easiest way to do this?

What is the best use case for BE15 Windows Agent and its down sides if any ?

Hi All,

I got the following license for the BE15 agenst:

SYMC BACKUP EXEC 15 AGENT FOR WINDOWS WIN PER SERVER BNDL STD LIC EXPRESS BAND S ESSENTIAL

I'm trying to make a good use of the existing licenses that I've got to protect my physical windows server, but not sure what are the downsides without the specific paid license for the agents like AD, SQL, Exchange, SharePoint agents.

is there any pros and cons when using this type of agent backup to the tape ?

Any idea and suggestion of what is the good use case or example would be greatly appreciated.

How restore SQL database to different server?

Hello!
WeusedNetbackup7.6.1
With scripts.bch has been configured Full online backup SQL database whichsucceeds. Recovery with .bch isalsosuccessful, butonly onthe same server. (in mode "recovered" and "not recovered" (.mdb,.ldb))

How to set upa database restoreto a different server?
I have triedto makethese instructions:

Recoveryis initiatedon the masterserver

Redirecting a SQL restore to a different host
Multiple NetBackup database clients can be configured to use a single NetBackup
master server for backing up SQL Server databases. With this configuration, you
can back up SQL Server database objects from one client and restore them to
another. In the following procedure, HostA is the client that was originally backed
up and HostB is the other client to which the restore is redirected.
To redirect a restore to a different host
1 Establish permission settings on the master server.
Do one of the following:
■ Create a install_path\NetBackup\db\altnames\No.Restrictions file
to allow unrestricted redirected restore privileges.
■ Create a install_path\NetBackup\db\altnames\HostB file to allow HostB
to restore HostA's data. The client named HostB can then access HostA's
data on the master as well as any other client's data that was backed up
on the master.
2 Select File > SetSQLServerconnectionproperties.
3 Log onto the target instance on HostB.
4 Select File > SetNetBackupclientpropertiesand select the current master
server to be a master server that is common to both HostA and HostB.
5 Select File > RestoreSQLServerobjects.
6 From the Backup History Options dialog box, select HostA as the SQL host
from which the target objects were backed up.
When the restore window appears it contains a history of objects that were
backed up from HostA. Select those objects and restore them to HostB.

In this scenario,I get an error

ERR - Error in CoCreateInstance: 0x80040154.

and Recoveryis initiatedon the clientserver which was backuped

Here is an examplewith the option"not recovered"

HostB - destination client

As now all I fix this? I already read a lot of topics on the forum and admin guide, but nothing happens...

Is it possible to perform a recovery exclusively on the master server in case the server is physically damaged power?

Thanks in advance.

Migrating from Windows 2003

End-of-World.jpg

Microsoft’s End of Support of Windows Server 2003 later this year has been much publicised. However for many organisations the true meaning of the tasks at-hand and the decisions to be made are not yet fully understood. For those who migrate away from Windows 2003 the planning and execution cycles will be long and complex. Through backup and recovery Symantec helps to mitigate the risk associated with migration and supports the decision to move forward, whatever the outcome.

Q: So what is the risk associated with the Windows Server 2003 End of Support Life?

A: There are two main aspects to the risk as organisations look at options for the future. Firstly and immediately, the removal of access to Microsoft support and the end of product hotfixes and security patches will leave some feeling uneasy. As we have seen in the past, platforms reaching this point can become targets for attack. Ensuring that the data hosted on legacy systems is protected is paramount – data is the number one priority. The second aspect is related to the migration itself. The ability to protect that critical data before, during and after migration is critical both for historical purposes but also to protect against the risk of failure during the migration itself.

Q: Where should organisations start when they think about this migration?

A: Three things should go into the planning cycle to begin with. Firstly, understand specifically where the risk exists in the environment. Secondly, manage the risk with a multi-tier long-term plan. The risks and outcomes are unlikely to be the same across all systems. Plan to ensure that data can be recovered and kept available whatever the outcome and whatever the risk. Backup and recovery are an important consideration early-on to help mitigate the risks before, during and after migration. Whilst the compelling event here is around software, there is also a risk around out-of-maintenance hardware; likely given the length of time since Windows Server 2003 reached end of sale.

Q: What are the likely outcomes that customers will move towards?

A: Four outcomes seem likely. Firstly, for some organisations or perhaps some parts of some infrastructures, the answer will be to do nothing in terms of migration. Custom applications for instance that require Windows 2003 may leave an organisation with no option but to maintain the Windows 2003 platform. In this instance, ensuring those systems are locked-down to prevent unintended code from being run will be important as will tight security and a frequent, regular data protection routine. The second option will be to migrate servers like-for-like. Upgrade the hardware and Windows platform to mitigate the hardware and software risk, particularly with so many Windows Server 2003 licenses being tied to the server hardware. Thirdly, and possibly most likely, migration to virtual will see risk removed with new hardware and new, consolidated operating system platforms which also server to reduce total cost of ownership, but which may leave data protection incomplete. The fourth option sees more and more organisations electing to move data and systems to the cloud. Uptake remains relatively slow, but is being seen as attractive from a cost, complexity, management perspective. Cloud is not without its own complexities and risks however and it is important to bear in mind that data in the cloud is not the only copy of data required. With the second, third and fourth options, being able to protect before, during and after migration is fundamental. Data is priority one.

Q: What characteristics should organisations look for as they think about data protection and recovery?

A: The ability to define and meet Recovery Point and Recovery Time Objectives (RPO and RTO) should be front of mind. A simple-to-use, unified data protection product will help to drive consistent, reliable recoverability before, during and after migration. Breadth of platform and application support allows for protection of all data on Windows 2003 systems with recovery to Windows 2012 systems, whether  physical or virtualized. These factors contribute to an organisation’s ability to protect frequently and recover quickly. Unifying data and system protection across physical and virtual can also present opportunities to support change: the ability to transform physical to virtual for testing or recovery purposes as new applications and updated operating systems need to be checked for compatibility and expected performance. Finally, throughout any operation of this magnitude and complexity visibility into and across all data and platforms is key not only in driving immediate recoverability but also to deliver greater granularity for recovery of data and systems with different levels of importance. Whilst all systems should be included in a simple licensing framework the all-encompassing nature of such a framework is important to allow for best use of product features. Not all systems require all features, so flexibility is important, remembering that data is priority one.

Q: So what should I do now in talking to my customers?

A: Three things:

Understand - What systems, applications and data to they have today?

                   - Where is the risk in their environment?

                   - What does the migration project lifecycle look like?

Manage     - What migration outcome best suits your customer’s need?

                  - What migration skills and plans can you help them build?

                  - What is the customer’s timescale relative to risk?

Plan          - Data is priority one – make sure it is protected throughout

          - Help with a wise choice – protect today, recover tomorrow

          - Understand and match characteristics to the right product features

I have four different drives backed up on a 2008 r2 server and the OS drive is the only drive that will not convert to a VHD.  It fails every time.  I have created conversion jobs for the other drive individually and they all run fine all using the same settings and locations as the OS conversion job but it fails.

With this error??

Error EC8F1F48: The 'Microsoft VHD' conversion process could not be completed.
Error EC8F1F46: An error occurred trying to retarget the virtual disk F:\DLC\Backup-hyperV\Backup-HyperV_C_Drive.vhd.

The other drives that do convert are using the same back file form the same location and saving the conversion to the same location which is actually a local drive on this server.

Quickly identify the amount of data to protect in an environment.

We are excited to announce the NEW Veritas™ Capacity Assessment Tool

As partners and end users move to a simpler Capacity-base licensing model, the Veritas™ Capacity Assessment Tool is designed to easily and quickly identify the amount of data to protect in an environment.

How does the Veritas Capacity Assessment Tool work?
The tool is a standalone, executable that can be run from almost any Windows x86 or x64 system. Microsoft server and desktop operating system platforms are supported.

(Note: Microsoft .NET 4.0 must be installed)

After running the tool, the user simply selects the machines for which data capacity should be calculated, and then starts the assessment process.

The tool is capable of scanning the contents of the local server on which it is being run, as well as the contents of other remote servers that are available on the network. This includes scanning multiple remote servers concurrently.

VCAT-2.png

How does the Veritas Capacity Assessment Tooldisplay results?
The tool generates a report after completing the assessment process. The report is designed to be user friendly and very easy to read, highlighting Total Used Space and Total Capacity in Terabytes from the assessment.

A ‘quick view’ is provided as soon as the assessment process completes. The user also has the options to switch to full view mode or to save the file for later reference.
